Florida, the Sunshine State, packs many touristic attractions and activities. The North is just as beautiful, with many natural wonders and historical sights, as well as smaller crowds. Travel at a slower pace and relax in serenity. Read on to learn about the best things to do and visit in North Florida.

Ghosts in St. Augustine, North Florida

St. Augustine is the nation‘s oldest city, founded in 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain. And it‘s also considered one of the most haunted places in the states. So whether you are a history fan or a fan of the paranormal, you will definitely want to visit it!

For example, there is the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. It’s famous for great sights from the top of the 219 step climb. And also for reported ghost sightings. In 1873, an unfortunate accident took place: daughters of Hezekiah Pittee, head of construction of the St. Augustine lighthouse, had fun riding construction carts until the cart flew into the water and drowned the girls. Their spirits are said to haunt the place.

Another scarily thrilling place to visit is the Old Jail Museum. Prisoners were held here from 1891 to 1953 in deplorable conditions, there were hangings and more than one unnatural and mysterious death. You could also stay in Casa de Suenos: a bed and breakfast that used to be a funeral home. Whatever tickles your fancy (or paranormal senses).

Castillo de San Marcos

In St. Augustine, we also recommend visiting Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the US, built over 23 years from 1672 to 1695. You can visit soldier rooms, see cannon firing demonstrations and even drink from the Fountain of Youth!

The entrance fee is only $15.00 per adult. It’s open seven  days per week from 9 AM to 5 PM. Just be aware that there is a maximum capacity of visitors so you might have to wait if you go on a popular day. The site is crowded the most during holidays and weekends.

Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, one of the only two high-style movie palaces in North Florida

Jacksonville, the largest Florida city, has much to offer, and theatre is among these things. The Florida Theatre was opened in 1927. It is one of the four remaining high‑style movie palaces in the state and one of the two in North Florida (the other is in Pensacola). Elvis played on this stage, as well as Hozier and Paramore.

You can see ballet and opera performances, music performances, or movies with live music played.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

Another great attraction in Jacksonville is the zoo. There are over 2,000 animals in a considerably large area. It is also one of the only seven zoos in the US with an animal wellness team, so the animals are well taken care of. The Gardens are also a great place to take a walk with unique plants and flowers. Learn more at their official website.

Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens

It’s also in Jacksonville! You could spend at least a week here and not get bored. Cummer Museum is the largest fine arts museum in Florida so if you are interested in art, definitely visit it. The gardens are also one of the most interesting in North Florida. Cummer Museum offers a broad range of activities, such as lectures, classes, workshops, camps, concerts, parties, many free events.

Talbot Island State Parks to enjoy untouched nature

If you are in Jacksonville, we also recommend visiting Talbot Island State Parks. First, there is the Little Talbot Island State Park. You will see white beaches and green woodlands, with ferns and moss-covered oaks. You might also be lucky enough to glimpse some wildlife, such as deer, raccoons, rabbits, armadillos, and bobcats.

Later on, there is the Big Talbot Island State Park with the famous Boneyard Beach Trail. On this trail, you can see skeletons of live oaks and cedars and can even climb them. It makes for a great photography session and a retrieve from the city life.

Amelia Island and Fernandina beach

Amelia Island in Northeast Florida, close to Georgia, is somewhat of a hidden gem. It‘s beautiful but very quaint, so it‘s a great place if you want to relax.

Fernandina Beach is the main town on this island. Once, it used to be a haven for smugglers. Now it is a cute and peaceful town. You can find many beaches, a lighthouse, maritime and history museums, parks, shops and everything you might need. Visit Palace Saloon, which is the longest-operating saloon in Florida. Also, consider traveling by Amelia Island Trolley: it is a great way to see all the historical places on the island.

Ginnie Springs for water acitivities

Do you like water and water activities? Then you should definitely visit Ginnie Springs, one of the best springs in Florida!

You will see clear blue waters and lush green nature. The water temperature is 72-degrees all year round, perfect for all water activities. Ginnie Springs even has underwater cave systems to explore. So go swim, dive, tube, snorkel, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, and enjoy yourself!

Ginnie Springs is in Northwest Florida, about 2.5 hours from Jacksonville. The pass is $30 a night during the high season. Bring a dry bag to protect all your valuables if you go there!

Swim at Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park

In this park, you will find one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the whole world. There is hardly a better place to cool off during hot Florida summers.

It is also very beautiful. Did you know that scenes from Tarzan and Creature of the Black Lagoon were filmed here? Nature fans will love it here. There are great hiking trails, where you might spot such wildlife as manatees, alligators, deer, turtles, and many birds. You can also take glass-bottom boat tours. It is also not far from the ocean: just a 30 minutes drive to sandy beaches at Alligator Point.

National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola

Opposite Jacksonville, there is Pensacola, the westernmost Florida city. One of the main attractions here is the National Naval Aviation Museum. If you like aircraft, the National Naval Aviation Museum is a must to visit. It features 150 restored aircraft and more than 4,000 artifacts, related to the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation.

Consider also visiting Fort Pickens. It was one of four Southern forts which the Confederate forces did not occupy during the Civil War. And explore Pensacola, with its Seville quarter, Palafox street, and more!

These are just ten of all the great places to visit in Florida. For example, there is the Devil‘s Millhopper, a 10,000-year-old and 120-foot deep limestone sinkhole. Kanapaha Botanical Gardens have the largest display of bamboos in Florida. You can see live butterflies from all over the world at the Florida Museum of Natural History. And much, much more!

We hope that you found some interesting objects to visit in North Florida. Perhaps you are a boater? Check out the best boating destinations in South Florida!

Germany is one of the most popular countries to visit in Europe. It is beautiful, populous, and has many famous attractions: from castles and medieval oldtowns to green nature, historic places, museums, and modern wonders. We definitely recommend visiting it if you have the chance! But if you are planning a trip, it is essential to know how to get around. Read on to learn about transportation in Germany so you can plan your trip. First, we will cover various ways to get from one city to another and then the transport in the cities themselves.

Domestic flights in Germany

If you come from the US, you might be used to traveling by domestic flights. However, Germany is small compared to the states, even if it is a large country in Europe. Although there are domestic flights, in most cases it is faster to go by train. Why? Because you do not waste time getting to the airports and waiting there.

However, it might be a good deal if you travel from the north to the south or vice versa. It can even be cheaper than trains. Also, you do not have to worry about missing your stop: you just wait for the plane to land.

You could fly Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, Berlin-Tegel, and Cologne-Bonn. The biggest airlines providing domestic flights in Germany are Lufthansa and Eurowings. Remember to book in advance because it can get pricey otherwise.

Cheapest transportation in Germany: buses

Buses are one of the cheapest ways to travel between cities in Germany. There are also many of them: you should find bus routes between almost all the cities. Of course, there are disadvantages. Buses are not as comfortable as trains, often more cramped and slower. For some people, it is also easy to get carsick.

If you want to save, we recommend FlixBus, which offers very affordable long-distance bus routes. You could get from the north to the south of Germany for as little as $30.

Nice and comfortable trains

The railway system is very well-developed in Germany and one of the favorite ways to travel. Trains are reliable, comfortable, and environmentally friendly. There are many different types of trains: ICE or Intercity Express trains are the fastest and only stop in major cities. InterRegio-Express (IRE) connects more cities. City Night Line (CNL) trains have sleeper cars and couchettes. Learn more here

Trains stop at the city center, which can be great and very practical. You can book tickets online or buy them from the vending machines and agents at the stations. One con is that traveling by train can be expensive. Also, keep in mind that there are train delays, so if you are transferring trains, have more than 10 minutes in reserve.

Find more information (or check out the routes and prices) on the official page for Germany railways here.

Cars when you want to do everything by yourself

Most travelers choose trains or buses, but cars are also a great way to travel at your own pace. You get to see the sights around, can stop wherever you want, and travel in private: no annoying tourists talking loudly behind your back. Also, Germany has a well-developed road system, with 12,996 kilometers of motorways.  There are many petrol stations along the roads, every 50 kilometers or so.

Of course, there are some cons too. You have to worry about fuel, parking and you cannot relax since you must drive. It can get expensive too: gas is quite pricey in Germany.

It is also a good idea to rent a car in Germany. Remember that automatic transmissions are rare there, so you might need to book such a car in advance. You need to be 25 years or older (although some companies offer rentals cars for people 21-24 years old with an additional charge).

If you are planning to rent a car, we recommend reading our tips, so you can have a great car rental experience.

City transportation in Germany

If you plan to visit Germany, you will most likely want to explore the cities. The most common way to get around is to use public transport. And the most common transportation method is the bus. In smaller towns, it might be the only public transportation type.

In the big cities, U-Bahn, which are underground trains, are also popular. They are usually underground but sometimes also run above the ground. There are also S-Bahn lines, which are Suburban trains and can take you to farther places than the U-Bahn. There are various tickets for public transportation: day tickets, week tickets, month tickets, tickets for long and short journeys. In many cities, some apps allow you to choose the right tickets and buy them.

Another great way to explore the cities is by bicycle. It is fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly. There are many bike rental stations in German cities. Learn more about renting bikes and bike types.

You can also rent a car, but it can be difficult and expensive to park. Consider it carefully.

Did you know that Florida has the most registered boats out of all states? It is not very surprising, though, when it is called the Sunshine State and has so many great boating destinations, especially in the south. Out of our top 7 boating destinations in the US, we dedicated two to South Florida. Of course, it definitely has more! In this article, we will look at the best boating destinations in South Florida.

The boating capital in South Florida: Fort Lauderdale

Let us start with the Venice of America and one of the greatest boating cities: Fort Lauderdale. Some even call it the boating capital of the world! One of the reasons is because the city hosts the International Boat Show every year at the end of October. Also, you can boat both in the ocean – it has 24 miles of beach on the Atlantic coasts – and in the Intracoastal waterways, which last for 165 miles in Fort Lauderdale and 3,000 miles in total.

Just 28 miles south of Fort Lauderdale is the well-known Miami. Miami is known for its long, white beaches and also as the cultural capital of Florida. So if you are planning to boat in Fort Lauderdale, definitely consider visiting Miami too!

Quieter boating in Biscayne Bay

Biscayne National Park is quite close to Miami but much, much quieter. Here, you can relax from all the hustle and bustle of the cities. There are also many things to do here. Biscayne Bay is known for its biodiversity: there are four ecosystems here. You can explore it on land, by hiking and camping. And, of course, on water, by boating, snorkeling, and other water activities.

Two of the most popular islands in Biscayne National Park are Boca Chita and Elliot Key. On Boca Chita, there is a historic 65-foot lighthouse. Elliot Key is the largest island in this park, perfect for swimming, camping, picnicking, and barbecuing.

A hidden South Florida gem: Everglades National Park

This park is not just a Florida treasure and the largest subtropical wilderness in the US: it is also a World Heritage Site, a Wetland of International Importance, and an International Biosphere Reserve. You can find both unique landscapes and rare species here. And you can observe it all from your boat! Of course, you must be responsible and protect this unique natural reserve. Boaters cannot harass wildlife, collect plants and animals, even snail shells, and must also complete Boater’s Education Program. Learn more about the boating requirements in Everglades National Park on their site.

No need to go to Bahamas: go boating in Florida Keys

From Miami and Fort Lauderdale, it is easy to reach the Florida Keys. Florida Keys is a coral cay archipelago and the southernmost part of mainland US. And it’s very, very beautiful! As well as rewarding for anyone with so many activities you can do. Try snorkeling, diving, water sports, fishing, swimming, exploring the reefs, and more.

The closest location to reach is Key Largo, the uppermost island. Some of the most famous places here are John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. In the Middle Keys, there is Long Key, a quaint place but great for birdwatching. Duck Key with Hawks Cay Resort and Sugarloaf Key in the Lower Keys are also very popular. Finally, Key West on the very end of the archipelago is a must-visit for many. Many famous personalities, such as Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, spent quite some time here. There is even an Ernest Hemingway Museum.

The remote Dry Tortugas National Park

Want even more remoteness? Sail for a hundred miles west of Key West and find Dry Tortugas National Park: a group of fascinating islands in the middle of nowhere. They are only accessible by boats and seaplanes. If you prefer not to boat there yourself, you could also take a ferry from Key West. The main attraction here is Fort Jefferson, one of the biggest 19th-century forts in the US, which takes up almost the whole island. You can also observe tropical birds, swim on sandy beaches with pristine water, and, of course, explore the islands by boat.

Tired of seas? Try Lake Okeechobee

When people go boating in South Florida, they usually don’t plan to go to a lake. But if you are coming down from the north, we recommend you stop by Lake Okeechobee. This lake is the largest freshwater lake in Florida, and it literally means “big water”. The lake has very scenic views and is very popular for bass fishing. If you want to boat in more protected waters, there is also Lake Okeechobee Waterway.

Go north to a boater’s paradise: Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay is a bit more to the north, but it features on many lists of the best boating destinations in the US and is definitely worth visiting. It is a large region, and there are many boating activities for all types of boaters – maybe that’s why it’s known as a boater’s paradise?

So, what are some things to try in Tampa Bay? First, visit many of the islands nearby. For example, there is the Beer Can Island, also known as Pine Key, and Tiki Bay Island, which is especially popular for parties and opening some beer cans, of course. Egmont Key is a natural reserve and also has a 19th-century fort and a lighthouse. Shell Key is a secluded island where you can snorkel on the Gulf side, as well as fish, swim, and sunbathe, of course. If you would like to explore urban Tampa more, go up the Hillsborough River. For watersports, like water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding, visit Riviera Bay. Finally, go to Lake Tarpon a bit north to enjoy some bass fishing.

We did not mention all the great boating destinations in South Florida, just a few. There is also Palm Beach, South Beach, Stuart, Peanut Island, Boca Lake, Lake Sylvia, and more. Perhaps you are looking to rent a boat or a yacht? Learn how to charter yachts affodarbly.

Hawaii is one of the most popular vacation spots in the US for families, couples, friends, solo travelers – basically everyone. There are many activities you can do in Hawaii, both cultural and natural sites to explore. You can go to 5-star hotels and restaurants or walk among untouched natural wonders. Hawaii vacation is a dreamy vacation, but it’s not considered an inexpensive one. But it can be affordable if you plan it right! In this article, we will list tips to plan a trip to Hawaii on a budget.

How to plan your flight to Hawaii and stay on a budget

The two biggest expenses you need to budget for when you plan a trip to Hawaii are getting to Hawaii and staying there. Getting cheap tickets to Hawaii is not easy, but it is possible. You need both skills and luck. We will list some tips for finding the best fares to Hawaii.

Use flight search engines. When you sign up, they usually send you the fares of major airlines for free. If you observe the prices for some time, you will start to notice the patterns. You will know when the prices are lower and when they are not. One of the sites you can try is CheapAir. Scroll to the bottom to find Fare Tracker. It’s best to start tracking around six months before you want to go to Hawaii.

As you probably already know, time influences the price of the tickets the most. Usually, the cheapest months to travel to Hawaii are April, May, September, and October, except around holidays. Also, try to travel on weekdays because weekend tickets are much more popular and more expensive.

It will also help if you are flexible: because you can choose the cheapest days for your flight in this case. Also, consider alternative airports, not just one. If you save a good amount on the plane tickets, it can be worth driving for a while to another airport. Also, consider flying to other airports in Hawaii instead of Honolulu airport because such flights can be much cheaper. You can later fly between islands.

Finally, buy the tickets early. It’s often best to buy about 50 days before the trip. Of course, you can buy earlier if you find a good place. Try not to buy later than 21 days before the trip because the tickets can become too expensive then.

Budget accommodation in Hawaii

Another substantial portion of your budget goes to accommodation, which often costs a quarter of all travel expenses. So, if you save on accommodation, you save a lot on the whole trip.

There is more than one type of accommodation from which you can choose. Usually, the first thing that comes to people’s minds is a hotel. If you are rich, you can stay in luxury hotels, of course, but if you are trying to save, it’s best to consider hotels of lower quality. Of course, the rooms will likely be much smaller, but you can save a lot if you do not mind minimalistic design. We also recommend finding a hotel with a kitchen and skipping hotel breakfast since they are usually overpriced and not worth it.

Another option is vacation rentals. They are private properties that owners rent out to vacationers short-term. Oahu passed a law that limits the number of vacation rentals, but you should still find plenty. Even if you stay in an illegal one, you won’t be penalized – it will be the owner. Still, it’s better to find a legal option. Learn how to choose vacation rentals

There is also a home-exchange project you can try, just like in the film The Holiday. You can have unlimited exchanges per year for just $150 a year. Of course, the choices are more limited, but you can luck out and save a lot if you find something.

Finally, if you are adventurous and like nature, consider camping. You can spend under $30 a night while staying on beautiful beaches. Of course, you have to bring gear, such as tents and sleeping bags. Do not try to save on the quality: get good gear. Otherwise, the quality of your vacation can suffer. You can also spend a portion of the time in a hotel if you miss comforts.

Plan transportation during your Hawaii trip

Transportation during the trip matters, but it does not usually take the largest part of the budget. Of course, you can still save a bit by making some choices.

Public transportation, such as buses, is one of the cheapest ways to get around, but it is very limited. Also, you waste a lot of time waiting when traveling on a bus. Of course, you can read or play on your phone, which you cannot do when driving a car. Still, you have less time to explore the island.

Although it’s not the cheapest way, we recommend renting a car if you plan to explore Hawaii a lot. You can find car rentals for only 20-30 dollars per day. Of course, if you plan to stay in one region, buses, bikes, and simply moving on foot might be okay. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the city, consider renting scooters to move around. Learn about scooter laws in Hawaii.

Bikes can also be a great way to explore the islands if you want to stay in the fresh air and exercise. Check out this guide on renting bikes in Hawaii.

Do not eat out: cook yourself and try street food

People eat not only to satisfy their basic needs and survive: good food can be a great pleasure. But it can also be costly. Let’s look at some tips to eat well in Hawaii and not spend too much money.

First, if you stay at a hotel, avoid hotel breakfast. They usually cost a lot and are not that rewarding. Secondly, people often eat out in restaurants when they travel. The food is good, but it can cost a lot. Also, it does not necessarily represent Hawaiian culture. One way to save on food is to cook yourself. This is why it is good to have a kitchen: you can prepare all the food yourself cheaper. However, you still have to pay attention, so you don’t spend too much on groceries. Many products have to be shipped to Hawaii, which makes them more expensive compared to the mainland. Cooking takes time, too.

Because of this, you should go for street food in Hawaii at least a few times. Street food is not only cheaper but also represents the Hawaiian culture better. You also have more time for exploring. And there are many, many choices. Did you know that the popular poke bowls are a part of native Hawaiian cuisine? Try them: the fish will definitely be fresh in Hawaii. Some other street foods to try in Hawaii are Loco Moco, traditional Hawaii plate lunch, Huli chicken, garlic shrimp, shave ice, and malasadas. Of course, there can also be Mexican, Indian, or other cuisine food trucks. You can also check out local farmers’ markets for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Choose inexpensive activities

We come to our final point, which can make or break your trip: the activities. Of course, the choice often depends on the traveler’s personality. Some like to spend their trips peacefully, while others want to do as much as possible. Fortunately, there are many things you can plan to do during your Hawaii trip and keep within budget. So, what can you do?

First, go hiking. Hawaii has spectacular nature, and it would be a shame not to explore it. Although there can be a fee to enter state parks – it could be $5 per walk-in and $10 per vehicle – it’s still cheap and totally worth it. There are also many trails you can go on for free.

Water activities can be super fun and cost-effective too. For example, if you want to go snorkeling, you can bring your own gear or rent it for maybe just $5 a day. If you are on the beach, you can sometimes find free Hula shows too!

There are also museums, such as Pearl Harbor Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, Lyman Museums, which tell the history of Hawaii, and more. You can also visit Iolani Palace, Hawaii Chocolate Factory, and more than one brewery. There is also a Coffee Farm, a Lavender Farm, and other interesting farms open to visitors. All these activities cost under $20.

Hopefully, these tips will help you plan a trip to Hawaii on a budget. Perhaps you are planning a group trip? Check out our article on organizing group trips!

Are you thinking about traveling in California? Great decision! The Golden State has many things to offer. It can be difficult for you to get bored here or run out of objects to visit. Of course, it is essential to prepare for your trip well to have as good an experience as possible. Read on to learn the most important things to consider when you plan a trip to California.

What is the best way to explore California?

By road trips! They are a good way to explore any state (check out road trips in Texas and Missouri), but California is almost perfect for them. One of the main reasons why is because the state is super big. It is the third-largest state. That is why if you are coming to California without a vehicle, you should rent a car

If you are planning to travel on highways, an SUV or a family car is good. However, if you plan to explore state parks, it is best to choose a 4×4 vehicle. Having a GPS will be very useful because some objects could be hard to find.

There are many cool road trips you can take. Some of the most popular roads include Highway 1, Highway 101, and Route 66, the last of which ends in Los Angeles. The coastal road trip is also great.

Of course, there are other ways to travel in California than cars. You can go from city to city by plane. You can also use buses. In cities, it is often not even worth having cars, as they are too crowded. Consider using electric scooters in the cities. Learn about their laws in California.

When should you plan to visit California?

Most people go to California in summer – the high season is from June to August – but you can visit it all year round. The low seasons are also great if you want to save a bit and avoid the crowds. Some places, of course, are best visited at certain times. For example, if you plan to hike in the mountains, it is best to do it in the summer. However, in winter, you can ski in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Some say that spring is the most beautiful season in California. Why? Because the wildflowers bloom. The fields, hills, and even deserts color in hundreds of colors: the super blooms transform even the barren Death Valley! The fall is another season with smaller crowds and milder weather. It is also when San Fransisco, usually covered in fog, has some of the sunniest days. The fall is also a great season to visit California’s wine regions as this is grape harvest time. However, although September and October have pleasant weather, it is also when most wildfires happen.

Finally, consider the time when you plan your trip. The more adventurous it is, such as if you plan to camp in the Death Valley, the more flexible your plans should be. When camping in nature, unexpected things can happen, which might prevent you from leaving on time. Also, remember that traffic in big cities might make you very slow. For this reason, you should plan for at least an extra day or two.

Prepare for California: some things you should take

Every state and country has some peculiarities for which you should prepare. California is no exception. It is not that exotic, though. It also depends greatly on which part you are traveling at which time of the year: north or south, inland or coastland. The main things you need in California are:

Sunscreen. California is one of the sunniest states, and the sun can be harsh here. Protect yourself from it. Take sunglasses too: you won’t regret it.

Water bottles and reusable bags. California cares a lot about ecology. Water and recycling are really important here. There is a 5¢ deposit every time you buy a plastic bottle. You can’t buy plastic bags, and the paper bags cost. Better to bring your own bottle and bags.

Raincoat and jacket. While California is warm, it can also be rainy, especially in the north. The nights in the desert can get very cold too. Prepare for that.

Camera. The Golden State has many picturesque places, so do not forget your camera! You will probably take hundreds of photos, if not thousands.

What to visit

Ah, the seemingly obvious but such a difficult question. California is the most visited state for a reason. We could be listing objects to visit all day. But we will try to sum it up to help you plan what to visit during your trip to California.

The most popular cities are Los Angeles and San Fransisco. You should spend at least 2-3 days there to explore them. But you could stay a week and not run out of things to do! They are also great for yachting and boating. However, it is not worth renting a car in those cities: an average person spends 85 hours looking for parking there, according to Inrix. Of course, you could rent a parking space. But bikes and scooters might be better to get around.

If you love nature, there is a lot of beautiful national parks to visit. Yosemite national park is known for its waterfalls and valleys. Joshua Tree National Park has a desert landscape with unique Joshua trees. Redwood National and State Parks are home to the tallest trees on this planet. The Sequoia & Kings Canyon also has those spectacular trees, as well as many other things to see. Don’t forget the Death Valley National Park, with the lowest point in North America, and its climate extremes. California also has Pinnacles National Park, Bodie State Historic Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Emerald Bay, Big Sur, and more. There are also many beautiful lakes: check out the best lakes in California.

Also, don’t forget Disneyland, Legoland, and other theme parks! They are full of entertainment for all members of the family. There is also Hollywood, of course, where you can tour studio sets. The most popular experiences are Jurassic Park, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and The Walking Dead attraction.

Final tips for planning a perfect trip to California

California is large so don’t plan to see all the things during your trip, unless you are traveling for a month or so. Also, it’s better to plan less rather than more to have some flexibility. Don’t miss a great experience just because it wasn’t on your list, and you are rushing to experience the others.

Do not bring too much stuff. It can be troublesome to carry. You will also have to worry less when you have fewer items.

Make reservations for popular hotels and campsites. California is the most visited state, and the number of tourists is immense. So don’t spoil your trip because you could not book the hotel where you wanted to stay so much. You should book in advance.

Did you enjoy these tips? Hopefully, you can now better plan your trip to California! Perhaps you need a car? Check out the cars for rent on XRental!

What can be better than a good trip? Maybe just traveling with good friends! Of course, granted that you plan the trip well. The process of planning a group trip might seem daunting. But you can do it if you follow some tips! Read on to learn our tips on how to plan a group trip.

1. Choose a leader or delegate responsibilities to plan the group trip

Planning a group trip is hard. It becomes even harder when everyone tries to plan together. Often, there is a natural leader in your group. It is better not to resist this dynamic and let them lead.

You can also delegate different responsibilities to different people. For example, one is responsible for the accommodation, the other for transportation, etc.

2. Know your group

People are different, and you will travel with various people. It is good to know the dynamics of the group: then you can plan the group trip accordingly with as few complaints as possible. For example, some people love nightclubs while others hate them. Your itinerary should address all needs. Allow everyone to express their opinion on the activities list.

It is also likely that some members will cancel the trip. Things happen, and often we cannot do much about it. To make things better, try to collect money two weeks before the trip. Also, it is best to book when there is the possibility of refunds.

3. Agree on a budget for the group trip

Budget is essential when traveling, and everyone should be clear on this. Otherwise, some people might end up canceling because it is too expensive for them.

We recommend individually asking each person what amount they are comfortable spending. When you ask all participants, set the budget per one person closer to the smallest amount rather than the highest. Collect the money before the trip and then use it to pay for accommodation, activities, etc. Apply for group rates whenever you can!

There are also apps to help you track and split expenses. Check out Splittr and Splitwise.

4. Consider staying in a home rather than a hotel

When someone mentions accommodation during trips, people usually think of hotels. But they are not the only choice. More and more travelers stay in vacation rentals rather than hotels. A homestay could be perfect for a large group because of savings. Other advantages include everyone staying together, being able to cook meals, and immersing more into the local culture.

5. Start early

When you book for a group, it can be hard to find seats for everyone on the same plane or rooms in the same hotel if you do it late. You have to start early. The longer and more complicated the trip, the earlier you should start. If you plan to make a road trip in your country, four months in advance is more than enough time. But if you plan to spend a week in a foreign country, you can start as early as a year in advance.

The flight tickets should be among the first things you book. Check if you qualify for a group discount. You can also let everyone book their flight by themselves: it will be easier to divide expenses later. Just make sure that everyone notes their arrival time and place in a shared document.

6. Plan what to do

While you do not have to plan all activities to a tee, think of some things to do. But do not plan everything by yourself! Everyone should have an equal voice. A good way is to vote on activities in a poll or write them down in a shared Google doc to allow everyone to express an opinion.

It might also be good to include some alone time. As much as you might like everyone in the group, they can tire you out sooner or later. Also, sometimes people want to explore different things. Alone time allows everyone to choose what to do.

Perhaps you are planning to travel to California? Check out our guide on how to plan a trip to California!

7. Use apps and disseminate information

No one wants to feel left out. Hopefully, you also do not want to leave anybody out too. Even if you are the one organizing everything, you should let everybody know everything. After all, this is not your trip: it is a group trip. So give everyone a chance to voice their options!

Fortunately, it is easier than ever to disseminate information. First, have a group chat. WhatsApp is a good choice. For storing information, Google doc is a great free tool. Everyone can view and edit the document. Some apps also allow you to create polls to vote on things to do or dates.

8. Have dinner reservations

That does not mean you have to plan every meal. You can think of breakfast and lunch already on the trip. But usually, people want to visit one or more nice restaurants for a nice meal. And hot restaurants are often full, especially if you need a table for many people. What to do? Make dinner reservations in advance!

Also, you may not want to split the bill equally when dining. Some people tend to order a three-course meal while others only have a salad. It can get messy to calculate everything, but it’s only fair to do so.

9. Get help if it’s too hard to plan the group trip by yourself

Planning is fun, but sometimes it can become too tiresome and time-consuming. But you can get help. One way is hiring a travel agent. They know about all the best destinations and hidden gems. Often, they also get special discounts. Travel agents also help meet all the different needs of every group member, which can be difficult on your own.

Another way is joining organized group tours. There are many different tours for different needs, which include lots of activities over a short time. The organized tour does not have to last during the whole trip: you can join a tour just for a day or half a day.

Hopefully, you learned something new. Perhaps you are planning to travel to Missouri or Texas? Check out the best road trip ideas!

Bikes are cool. Missouri is a cool place to ride a bike too. But you have to know the rules to ride safely and comfortably, with minimum risk of accidents and penalties. We reviewed and summarized Missouri bike laws just for you, so read on if you are interested.

Where do the laws allow to ride a bike in Missouri?

The most important thing is to know the legal places to ride. Riding on illegal roads does not only increase the risk of an accident but might also bring you a penalty.

First, let’s talk about the roads. Bicyclists can ride on all roads and streets, except interstates. The speed there is just too great, and they are too dangerous for cyclists. When riding on a road, ride in the same direction as other traffic and stay on the right side. You can use road shoulders too. Two cyclists can ride side by side, as long as they do not obstruct the way for other traffic.

You can also ride bikes on sidewalks, except in business districts. Missouri bike laws strictly prohibit riding on sidewalks in business districts. Otherwise, you can use sidewalks but remember that pedestrians have the right of way. Before overtaking them on sidewalks, give a signal. You can’t ride motorized bicycles (similar to mopeds) on the sidewalk, though.

Katy trail is the longest trail in Missouri

Missouri laws when riding bikes in the dark

If you plan to ride in the dark (30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes to sunset), there are more rules to minimize the risk of accidents. The bike must have:

  • A lamp in the front (installed or carried by the cyclist) with a white light that is visible from 500 feet away;
  • A red reflector in the rear that is visible from 600 feet away;
  • Reflective material or lights on moving parts of the bicyclist, such as lower legs, visible from 200 feet away from the rear and the front;
  • And reflective material or lights on the sides vehicle or the bicyclist, visible at 300 ft.

This equipment should make other drivers see you in the dark. Of course, you must follow general safety rules too, just like during the day.

Required bike equipment

To legally ride on public roads, the bike must have certain equipment. Brakes are the most important. You must be able to stop within 25 feet when riding at a speed of 10mph. There is also the equipment you need at night, which we already covered.

What about helmets? The state itself does not say anything about helmets, but different Missouri counties have different rules. In most municipalities of St. Louis County, bicyclists under 17 need to wear helmets. Some even require everyone to wear helmets. Columbia and St. Charles municipalities require cyclists under 16 to wear helmets.

Following the rules for motor vehicles

Bicyclists are not exempt from traffic rules. Just like motor vehicles, they have to follow all the traffic rules applicable. So, do not forget to stop at a red light, do not ride drunk, signal turns with your hand or mechanical devices. Be especially careful when making a left turn. If the road has two lanes, move to the second lane to make a left turn. Still, try to stay to the right side of this lane too.

If you do not obey traffic rules or bike laws, you can get a fine. If you are under 17, the bike might also be impounded for up to 5 days. Also, if a car hits you when you are not abiding by one of the laws, you will likely be partially at fault and might not recover damages.

Also, be careful when riding. We do not recommend listening to music or looking at your cellphone when on a bike. Such things distract you, and you might not notice an obstacle, crash, and put at risk not only yourself but also others.

Hopefully, you have a better idea about Missouri bike laws now and will be able to ride safely. You may want to have a copy of the bike laws on you all the time: it is useful to check it from time to time or show it to other people in case of an argument. You can download a convenient copy for print here.

Are you planning a trip to Hawaii? Ask yourself how you will get around. There are buses and rental cars and taxis, of course. But if you are looking for a more flexible vehicle, consider scooters. You have to know the regulations, though. Read on to learn about essential Hawaii scooter laws to operate your moped, motor scooter, or e-scooter safely.

Moped laws in Hawaii

Mopeds are often confused with scooters: you can learn more about their differences here. Like most states, the Hawaii state considers mopeds to be transportation devices with an engine up to 50cc. They must also have automatic transmission and a maximum speed of up to 30mph. You can drive it with any driving license: you do not need a motorcycle license specifically. The minimum age to ride a moped is 15.

You can ride mopeds on all roads, including highways. The moped should be as near the right side as possible, except when making a left turn, avoiding something, or when a road carries traffic in one direction and has two or more lanes. However, the best places to ride mopeds are bike lanes: if you see them, be on them, except if the sign prohibits it. Never ride on sidewalks. Finally, only one person can ride a moped. Minors must also wear helmets.

If you plan to buy your own moped in Hawaii, keep in mind that you need to register it to ride on public highways. You must have a certification label from the manufacturer and complete a safety inspection. You will then have to wear your registration decal on the rear fender of the cycle.

Hawaii motor scooters laws

Hawaii defines motor scooters as vehicles that are more powerful than mopeds: they have an engine larger than 50cc and a speed of more than 30mph. The state also puts motor scooters and motorcycles in one category. You also need a motorcycle license to ride both in Hawaii.

Both motor scooters and motorcycles are entitled to use the full lane. However, two motorcycles can ride side by side. Motor scooters and motorcycles drivers can also use HOV lanes. However, lane splitting is prohibited, and you can only overtake other vehicles in a separate lane. Minors need to wear helmets on scooters. Also, a scooter must have a windshield, or you must have eye protection.

If you plan to purchase a motor scooter or a motorcycle in Hawaii, do not forget to register and insure it. If you are planning to rent one, the rental company should take care of it. You need to be 18 and have a driving license to rent a scooter in Hawaii.

Electric Scooters in Hawaii

Electric scooters are becoming some of the most popular transportation devices in the cities. They are ecological, flexible, and fun. But the Hawaii State scooter laws are still not very well-developed, compared to, say, California scooter laws. In 2021, lawmakers are just starting to legalize scooters and set regulations. You can check out the new laws here.

According to the laws, you need to be at least 15 to ride electric scooters on public property. You also need to wear a helmet with a chin strap under 16 (although we recommend everyone to wear it). You must also ride alone and keep both hands on the handles. If you plan to use the scooter in the dark, it must have lights equipped, which cannot be blue. The maximum speed allowed is 15mph. You can ride scooters on streets and highways, although bike lanes are usually the best places for electric scooters. The law allows counties to set regulations themselves, such as on parking, allowing scooters on sidewalks and highways, etc. So be sure to check the rules in a specific county where you will ride!

If you plan to rent one, you usually need to be 18 and need a driver’s license. If you are planning to purchase one, you also need to register it. Considering the two choices? Check out our article on whether to buy or rent an electric scooter.

Hopefully, you learned something new about scooter laws in Hawaii or reviewed the knowledge you had. Of course, scooters are not the only option of moving around in Hawaii. You can always rent a car or choose bikes: check out our article on renting bikes in Hawaii.

Texas, the Lone Star State, the second largest in the US, is rarely considered the best tourist destination. But it certainly has many things to offer! From beautiful landscapes and nature trails to historic districts and museums, the state has it all. Read on to learn about the best road trips in Texas.

A classic road trip: Texas Route 66

The Mother Road runs through Texas, too! And it’s one of the best road trips you can take in Texas. The Texas part is not as long as in other states, such as Missouri. But it definitely has many attractions. The current Interstate I-40 runs very similarly to how Route 66 used to run.

Start at Shamrock, then head to McLean. Here you can see one of the first gas stations, Texas Route 66 Museum, and the Devil’s Rope Museum. Afterward, visit Amarillo, the largest city on the 178 mile Route 66 portion. It has a Route 66 Sixth Street Historic District, a nightlife and shopping hub, with restaurants, antique and specialty shops. Also, check out Big Texan Steak Ranch, where you can try their 72 oz steak challenge! There is also a famous Cadillac Ranch nearby. After Amarillo, head to Vega, a small town, and Adrian, Route 66 halfway point. There, you can stop at MidPoint Cafe to eat classic American dishes, just like in the 50s.

For nature lovers: Texas state parks

Big Bend National Park is one of the best state parks in Texas. There are 238 miles of trails, which you can hike, bike, or ride on horseback. There are even trails you can drive on with 4×4 vehicles! Big Bend Park is large, remote, and is not visited so often, so it has a low level of light pollution and is a perfect location for stargazing. However, remember that it is a desert park and the temperatures can rise very much in summer. Try not to hike in the afternoon and drink lots of water.

Also, consider visiting Big Bend State Ranch Park too, which is very near. And if you go to the east, you will find Seminole Canyon State Park and Kickapoo Cavern State Park, which are also great.

Dallas Loop

Belt Line Road is a 92-mile looping road near Dallas, with 15 cities on the road. You can see both urban and historic sights, as well as beautiful nature spots.

First, visit Fort Worth because it’s worth it! Pun intended. There are Cultural District and Botanic Garden museums and a zoo. There are more than 200 patios and restaurants, so you will find something you like for sure. Also, consider visiting Dinosaur Valley State Park nearby, where you can see dinosaur footprints!

Later, head to Waco. Explore the Magnolia market, the Woolly Mammoth, and Dr Pepper museums. Other attractive towns nearby include Carrollton, Garland, and Grand Prairie, with historical architecture, peaceful shopping streets, and lovely markets.

Texas Beach Road Trip

Although beaches might not be what first comes to mind when someone thinks of Texas, they are beautiful and well worth exploring. You can start at Galveston near Houston, an island city. It has more than beaches: check out The Strand Historic District and glass pyramids in Moody Gardens, such as the Aquarium pyramid. There is also Galveston Island State Park, great for bird watching, kayaking and fishing.

After exploring Galveston, you can go to Surfside Beach, a lovely and peaceful beach town. The ride will take just an hour. Then you can move to Matagorda, which is much quainter and less-visited than Galveston, but its nature might be even more beautiful.

Finally, go towards Rockport, which has many attractions nearby. Rockport beach is the first Texas Blue Wave beach, safe and beautiful. There is also Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. It has more than 400 bird species, including the only flock of wild whooping cranes, one of the rarest American birds. If you want some more peace and natural sights, consider San Jose and Mustang Islands.

El Paso road trip to feel like a cowboy

Do you want to feel like a cowboy? Travel around El Paso! This city is surrounded by deserts and mountains, great for exploring. First, of course, visit El Paso itself. There are two peaks of interest very nearby: Mount Cristo Rey and the Franklin Mountains. The Franklin Mountains are in the middle of the city so you can hardly miss it. Mount Cristo Rey is very close too and offers a great view from the top.

Afterward, you can visit Hueco Tanks State Park, which has unique granite formations. Rock climbers love it especially! Just keep in mind that you either have to book a tour or reserve a permit for a self-guided tour in advance. Then, visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which has the highest peaks in Texas. The park is superb for hiking and backpacking.

If you want to make a loop from El Paso, go south to visit Fort Davis and Marfa. The Davis Mountains near Fort Davis are great for bird-watchers, as well as nature enthusiasts. There is also a Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch and Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. Then, visit Marfa, which is an art and soaring center. Here you can see the famous sculptural installation Prada Marfa.

The most popular cities: Austin to San Antonio

This list of Texas road trips could not complete if we did not include the most popular Texas cities and the route between them. There are only about 80 miles between them but a bunch of attractions. You can either go by the I-35 or backroads: you could explore more lovely small towns this way. Also, keep in mind that there can be traffic jams on I-35.

What to visit? First, San Marco. The city is known for its outlet shopping, a clear river you can even snorkel in, and having Texas State University stands here. A bit off to the side but pretty close is Lockhart, Texas Barbecue Capital, where you can have amazing lunch! Afterward, there is the New Braunfels town. It has both Guadalupe and Comal Rivers, Schlitterbahn Water Park, and the historic Gruene district. If you are a fan of natural wonder, consider visiting Natural Bridge Caverns between New Braunfels and San Antonio.

Did you enjoy these Texas road trips ideas? Would you like to try one? Of course, you need a vehicle. You can easily rent a car, even if you don’t have one! XRental also offers many cars: check it out!

Boating is a popular luxury pastime, and the US is the perfect place to enjoy it. It is so vast and has so many diverse landscapes that it’s just impossible not to find something perfect for each boating enthusiast. But some places are simply better than others. In this article, we will look at the best boating destinations in the US.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Venice of America

Fort Lauderdale, sometimes called the Venice of America, is in the south of Florida. According to Sunny.org, it has 24 miles of Atlantic beaches and more than 300 miles of waterways, both intracoastal and inland. It is one of the boating centers in the US.

Also, if you visit Fort Lauderdale at the end of October, consider participating in the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the largest boat shows in the world. However, if you visit Fort Lauderdale city itself, be careful: it is considered very unsafe. It’s not only many crimes, though, but COVID-19 concerns and poor credit scores.

Exotic boating in Florida Keys, southernmost US

From Fort Lauderdale, it is pretty easy to reach the Florida Keys, the southernmost part of the continental United States. It is a coral cay archipelago and a boater’s dream. There are about 800 islands and 6,000 reefs. If you visit the Florida Keys by boat or yacht, don’t forget to try fishing, snorkeling, diving, and other water activities! It is often the main reason why people visit the Keys.

The best time to visit the Florida Keys is from October to April because the temperature is not so hot. Also, remember that the Keys is a marine sanctuary, so stay responsible.

Boating base: Knoxville, Tennessee

Here, the Tennessee river rushes down from the mountains into Lake Tellico. Both the river and the lake are great places to explore by boat. Rafting, kayaking, motorboats, sailboats, and yachts: you can enjoy all types of boating here! Knoxville is also a base for many boat manufacturers, such as Sea Ray and MasterCraft. They often test their boats in the waters here.

The Tennessee law requires all boats used primarily here to be registered, except those powered by oars and paddles. But if the boat is registered elsewhere, you can use it in Tennessee without registering it.

Wildlife in San Juan Islands, Washington

Are you interested in marine wildlife? The San Juan Islands are one of the best places to observe wildlife while boating. Here, you can see orcas all year round, as well as other species such as humpback whales, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and more. Just do not bother the animals!

Although the islands are close to rainy Seattle, they are protected from the rain by the Olympic mountains and quite sunny, with almost 250 sunny days a year. There are even cacti growing in some islands! You can visit the islands in spring, summer, and fall. July, August, and September are the driest and warmest months, but spring and fall tend to be more peaceful.

Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Ozark lake has a shoreline of more than 1,150 miles and is one of the largest artificial lakes. Here, you can fish, try various watersports, hike on the shore, dine at restaurants, relax at a spa center, and more.

However, there is a drag racing culture in Lake of the Ozarks, with some boats trying risky moves. If your boat is small, be careful of them. There have also been high levels of E. Coli found in the lake.

Calmness in Mackinac Island, Michigan

Located in Lake Huron, this is a pretty quiet destination but definitely worth visiting. It’s only a little more than four square miles, and the only transportation is horse buggies, bikes, and boats. But it can feel like a superb retreat because of this. Enjoy the scenic views of the Great Lakes, dine at yachting clubs, explore historic sites and museums, golf, and enjoy your boating vacation.

Newport, Rhode island

Newport is on Aquidneck Island and is unique because of being very close to the open ocean. Boaters and sailors enjoy exploring many beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, and historic sites since settlers have been coming here since the 1600s. It is especially great for sailing: even the America’s Cup was hosted for quite some time here. The climate is very temperate here, and adventurous people sail even in winter.

Other great boating places in the US

Of course, this is by no means an extensive list. There are many more wonderful boating destinations, such as San Fransico and San Diego in California, Nantucket, a former whaling port in Massachusetts, Charleston with its many beaches, harbors, and tidal creeks in South Carolina. Explore the fresh‑water lakes in Florida (be careful of alligators), or party in Lake Havasu just 24 miles from Las Vegas. Go to Maui, Hawaii, if you are looking for something exotic, or cruise down the Chicago River to observe the Windy City.

Missouri, the 24th state in the US with more than 6 million people, has many things to offer. And great destinations and road trips are among them! Roads trips let you discover new things, recharge, and self-reflect. You only need a vehicle, whether your own or a rental car, some fuel, and a destination to go on one! Let’s explore some of the best road trips to travel in Missouri.

Travel to Missouri State Parks

Missouri has 91 state parks: how much time would it take to travel to them all? But you can visit a few in just a day. For example, Weston Bend State Park, Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge, and Crowder State Park are roughly in the same area. Weston Bend State Park has beautiful woody scenarios, Loess Bluffs Refuge has a great variety of animals, and Crowder State Park has picturesque green rolling hills.

Some other great natural places not too far from St. Louis are Hughes Mountain. Here, you can find some of the most ancient exposed rocks. Afterward, you can travel to Echo Bluff State Park with its impressive bluffs and waters.

State parks can be great to explore by bike. Learn about Missouri bike laws here.

Explore the Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks is amongst our top boating destinations in the US, but it offers just as much for non-boaters.

You can start your trip at Osage Beach by the lake. Explore the shores, cute towns, maybe rent a pontoon if you feel like boating. There is also a swinging bridge and the oldest legal distillery in the county. Here, explore Lake of the Ozarks State Park, the largest state park in Missouri. Then, just 15 minutes from Osage beach, there is the Ha Ha Tonka State Park, where you can see some of the few castle ruins in the US. There is also a Bridal Cave close by, where you can book a guided tour to explore fascinating cave formations. Travel south to Lebanon to explore the Heartland Antique Mall. There is also Boswell Park, which is a part of the Route 66 attractions.

Travel the Route 66 in Missouri

Route 66 is likely the most famous road ever, running from Chicago to Santa Monica, going through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. . John Steinbeck once called it “the mother road, the road of flight”. People go down this route for history and nostalgia. The Missouri part is great for a road trip!

Cities on Missouri Route 66 include St Louis, Cuba, Rolla, Lebanon, Springfield, Carthage, Brooklyn Heights, and Joplin. It’s almost 300 miles and takes more than 5 hours: of course, without stopping anywhere. Learn more here.

Marvel at Missouri Waterfalls

Missouri also has quite a lot of rivers and waterfalls. From Mina Sauk Falls, the highest waterfall in the state, it’s a short distance to Johnson’s shut-ins, where the river cascades over rocks in many rivulets. An hour from Johnson’s shut-ins are Hickory Canyons in St. Genevieve, which look best after heavy rain. There is also a beautiful waterfall in Marvel Cave, or Grand Falls in Joplin, the largest continuously flowing waterfall in Missouri. But they are quite a bit south of Hickory Canyons: it’s more than four hours drive.

The Way of the American Genius

Highway 36 does not sound as grand as Route 66, but it is very much worth a visit. This area is connected to such people as Mark Twain, Walt Disney, Molly Brown, J. C. Penney, and Jesse James, and such discoveries as quilt, pony express, and sliced bread. Highway 36 starts at Saint Joseph in the northwest and finishes at Hannibal in the northeast. It’s almost 200 miles.

Attractions along the route include Pony Express Museum at Saint Joseph, J. C. Penney Museum at Hamilton, a mural dedicated to sliced bread in Chillicothe, Pershing State Park and Locust Creek covered bridge in Meadville, Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline and Mark Twain’s and Molly Brown’s museums in Hannibal. Choose this route if you like museums, history and want to feel closer to American Geniuses.

Visit Missouri watermills

Are you a fan of watermills? Missouri is one of the best states to explore watermills. You can start at Rockbridge Mill, which was built in 1888 and operated until the 1940s. Now it is a perfect calm retreat, where you can dine, fish, and relax. From there, it’s only 25 minutes to a very picturesque Hodgson Mill. Another 20 minutes south to get to the Dawt Mill. And if you are up for a lengthier trip, drive north to Alley Spring&Mill, Old Mill at Montauk State Park, Reed Spring Mill, and Dillard Mill.

Find Missouri Wine Country

Do you like wine? Are you interested in winemaking? Consider touring Rhineland, the Missouri wine country. Besides wineries, it has beautiful nature and some German-style buildings.

Start in St. Louis and travel to Augusta, which has antique shops, wineries, quaint B&Bs, and more. Then, go to Hermann, settled by Germans, which has a WurstFest held here every March! There are also wineries and vineyards, of course. Afterward, travel to Rocheport with wineries, tasting rooms, antique shops, and historic walking trails.

Electric scooters are cool. Whether you have your own or are planning to rent one, there are things you should know before riding off to the streets. You do not want to get a fine, do you? We will tell you all about California scooter laws, as they are set out in California Vehicle Code §21235, so you can ride your scooter safely and happily.

Wear a helmet if you are under 18

It is a legal requirement, which can get you a $200 fine if you do not comply. You can use a bicycle helmet, although a full-face helmet is safer. Remember to fasten it well.

Adults are not required to wear a helmet, but we really recommend it. Scooter accidents are pretty frequent, and you want to avoid head injuries at all costs. If you decide to ride without a helmet, you do it at your own risk.

Have a valid driver’s license

When riding a scooter, you have to carry a valid driver’s license. You also need one to rent a scooter. You can also use a learner’s permit instead. But if the police catch you on a scooter without a driver’s license or a learner’s permit, you will get a traffic ticket.

Do not tandem ride

Taking a passenger with you on the scooter, also known as a tandem ride, is forbidden. It is very unsafe as it becomes much harder to control a scooter with extra weight.

You also can’t carry any bundles that would not allow you to keep both hands on the handles.

Do not go faster than 15 mph

The speed limit for scooters is 15 miles per hour. If you go over it, you can be stopped and fined: the fine can be up to $250. So be careful not to speed too much!

If you use a Bird or Lime scooter, you won’t even be able to go faster. But if you ride at full-speed downhill, the speed increases, so keep that in mind.

Dismount when making a left turn

It might sound annoying, we know. But it’s the law, and the authorities passed it to protect you. Left turns are difficult, and the probability of an accident is pretty high. So when you want to turn left on an electric scooter, do this:

  • At the intersection, stop on the right curb;
  • Dismount;
  • Make a turn by walking.

Do not ride a scooter on the sidewalk

The best place to ride a scooter is bike lanes, either class II or class IV. Class II bikeways are separated from the street by a white stripe. Class IV bikeways have physical barriers from the street traffic, such as cones. The speed limit is also 15mph.

If you can see no bike lanes, you can travel on streets, but their speed limit cannot be higher than 25mph. Local authorities might also allow scooters on roads with speed limits up to 35mph. You still cannot ride the scooter faster than 15mph.

You can only step on sidewalks when you are planning to park the scooter (also, remember to park nicely to not block the area for pedestrians). Crosswalks are also technically sidewalks, so cross them on foot. You can get a ticket for not doing so.

Follow all other vehicle safety rules

According to the California Vehicle Code, an electric scooter has the same rights and obligations as other motor vehicles. Of course, you don’t have to wear a seatbelt because an electric scooter does not have one. But, for example, do not drive intoxicated: you can get a DUI charge just the same, as well as a ticket up to $350.

These are the most important laws to abide by when riding an electric scooter in California. There might also be some local rules in certain areas.

California, one of the largest and the most populated states in the US, can be proud of many things. Great boating destinations are definitely among them. Boaters and yachters love cities along the 840 miles long pacific coast, such as San Fransisco and San Diego, and they are great, but what about lakes? Did you know there are 3,000 of them in the Golden State? And they are awesome for boating. In this article, we will look at best 10 lakes to explore by boat in California.

Lake Tahoe

It is the second-largest lake in California and the largest Alpine Lake in North America. And one of the best boating destinations, to be sure! It is on the border of California and Nevada and surrounded by Sierra Nevada Mountains, which makes for very scenic sights to observe from a boat. All kinds of boats are popular here: motor and sailboats, jet skis and yachts, kayaks, and paddle-boats.

On the shores, you can find many hike trails. Lake Tahoe is in the Emerald Bay State Park, so nature sights here are really worth visiting. Nightlife enthusiasts will also not be bored: you can find great entertainment in Stateline and South Lake Tahoe cities.

Folsom Lake

This is another lake by the Sierra Nevada Mountains and another destination for boaters. Although this is not the only popular activity here: horseback riding, camping and hiking are too. It’s most popular with motorboats and jet skis, or at least it used to be so. In 2020, California State Parks lowered the speed limit to 5mph because of low water levels, so it’s just as safe for a non-motorized boat now too.

Lake Berryessa

This freshwater reservoir is two hours north of San Fransisco. All kinds of boats are welcome here, from houseboats to kayaks, although non-motorized boats are more popular. You can also easily rent out one; you do not have to be an owner! Explore the many coves and pretty beaches or try water various water activities. The mild temperature at the reservoir offers a retreat from the heat even in midsummer. Do not forget to check out the Morning Glory Spillway, which is basically a gigantic drain plug!

Lake Almanor

Another one of the best lakes in Northern California is Lake Almanor, popular as an affordable family vacation destination. This large lake is good for all kinds of boating, as well as fishing and water activities. There are many marinas along the coast, even some free launch ramps. The nearest town is Chester, with 2,000 inhabitants, and it has everything you might need. Choose this spot if you are not looking for something fancy but a simple and affordable place to spend your boating vacation.

Shasta Lake

Lake Shasta is the largest artificial lake in California, with a shoreline of 370 miles. It is in Northern California, 15 miles from Redding. Motorboats are the most popular here. Besides jet skis, there are also really many houseboats. You can either bring your own or rent all types of boats here.

There is not much wind here, and the waters are smooth, so Lake Shasta is known for various water activities, such as wakeboarding, water skiing, and more. Also, consider booking a tour to Lake Shasta caverns. The caverns are impressive, and you might even see some bats!

Big Bear Lake

This one is great to visit all year round. It is also unique scenery in California: a snow-fed lake at a 6,700 feet height and surrounded by pine trees. There are six marinas along the shores, where you can rent out a boat if you do not have one. You can also hop onto the Miss Liberty cruise for 90 minutes to hear the site’s history and see the most famous sights. The lake is not large, having a shoreline of 22 miles. The boat cannot be longer than 26 feet.

Silverwood Lake

Silverwood Lake is located in the same mountainous region in Southern California as Big Bear Lake and is only 90 minutes from Los Angeles. Besides enjoying boating and the rugged beauty of the scenery, one of the most popular activities here is bass fishing.

However, there are only 125 boats allowed in the lake at once. So have a boat launch reservation before you come in the high season, from May to September. Boat launching costs $10; canoes and kayaks do not have a fee.

Mono Lake

Mono lake is one of the oldest lakes in the US and three times saltier than the ocean. Because of this, there are unique tufa towers, sprouting from the water. This lake is popular among birdwatchers because millions of migrating birds stop here.

However, there are some restrictions on boating in Mono lake. The water is too salty and alkaline for speedboats and jet skis, and there are many underwater tufa towers. Also, to protect the birds, it is forbidden to go within one mile from the lake’s islands from April 1 to August 1 and to approach osprey nests and flocks of birds.

Lake Havasu

This Colorado River impoundment is between California and Arizona, surrounded by deserts and only 24 miles from Las Vegas: you can see its lights here! The lake has mild temperatures and can be visited all year round. A famous tourist attraction is the London Bridge across the lake. The lake is especially popular among houseboaters and motorized boat owners, although you can also sail, fish, and do many other things here.

Cachuma lake

This picturesque lake is in the Santa Ynez Valley, half an hour from Santa Barbara. The surrounding oak woods are a marvelous sight. This lake is a domestic water supply, so you cannot swim, water ski, or jet ski, as no body-to-water contact is allowed. But you can enjoy canoes, kayaks, and bass fishing: it’s actually one of the best California lakes for fishing. Also, visit Cachuma Lake Recreation Area for hiking, picnicking, camping, and more.

We hope that you were able to choose the next lakes in California to explore by boat. You don’t have to be a boat owner to enjoy such vacations since you can usually rent boats at those places. Perhaps you are renting out boats yourself? Check out our article on how to make more money with boat rentals! Or, if you are planning to rent a boat for the first time yourself, check out our tips for renting a boat.

The Mediterranean Sea is the largest inland sea and has some of the most popular yachting destinations globally. Are you planning a yachting trip in the Mediterranean? There are so many great destinations it can be hard to choose one! In this article, we will discuss the best places for a yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

The yachting season in the Mediterranean starts in late April and lasts until early October. In winter, the waves and the winds are much harsher, so sailing is more difficult.

There are many types of different yachts you can choose. Since many companies and owners offer charter yachts, you can find a yacht affordably in the Mediterranean.

Eased charter rules in the Balearic Islands, Spain

These islands have been a popular location for a long time and might be becoming even more popular. Since January 2018, new regulations came into force in the Balearic islands. They simplified the chartering process, especially for non-EU yachts: they don’t require special licenses anymore. You can sail all year round here, but January is the coldest month. October has the most rain.

The four main Balearic islands are Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza. They all have something special. Mallorca is the largest island and boasts of many attractions. Ibiza is known for its nightlife and parties and has the largest nightclub in the world. But it also has beautiful nature sights and many nature reserves. Menorca is perfect for sailing beginners since its bay of Fornells and port of Mahon have a constant breeze and are protected from high seas. Finally, visit Formentera, the smallest and quietest island of the four. It has both calm, idyllic beaches and many water sports activities.

Classic yacht charter: Cote d’Azur, French riviera

French Riviera, the Mediterranean coastline in the southeast of France, is a great place for a yacht charter. Such famous cities as Nice, Cannes, Toulon, Saint Tropez, and Monaco are here, with many famous yachting clubs. There is lots of great food and big parties here.

Another lovely French location to charter a yacht is Corsica Island. Mountain enthusiasts especially love it because it has some of the most beautiful mountain views.

Sardinia, Italy

Close to Corsica, just south of it, is another Mediterranean island: Sardinia. There are many small islets around the coastline that are lovely to visit. Costa Smeralda is a good starting point for your yacht trip since it’s only 20 km away from the Olbia airport. It also has one of the most popular beaches, the Emerald Beach. One of the most beautiful Sardinia’s highlights is La Maddalena Islands, a national marine park.

Undiscovered gems: Croatia

Yachting in Croatia might not scream luxury so much as yachting in the French Riviera does. But it’s more affordable, calmer, and likely just as worthwhile. It’s a bit similar too, not being located too far! Or even better: Croatia has over 1000 islands and islets, although only about 60 islands are populated. The most popular islands are Hvar, Brac, and Korcula. A great city to start your sailing trip is Split.

Some of the most popular places to visit are Zagreb, Dubrovnik, and Šešula bay. Zagreb is the capital and most populated city, a cultural hub. Dubrovnik has a beautiful old town by the sea, surrounded by stone walls. Šešula bay will offer some calmness after an intensive trip and also protect your ship from the winds.

The largest Mediterranean archipelago: Greece

The Greek archipelago is the largest in the Mediterranean. It has from 1,200 to 6,000 islands: no one has counted them all yet! Of course, similarly to Croatia, only a small part of them have inhabitants, about 200. Like Croatia, Greece also has considerably low prices.

One of the most popular sailing locations in Greece is the Ionian islands. It is a group of islands in the west of Greece. They are great for beginning sailors, as well as the Saronic Gulf. On the other hand, the Cyclades in Southern Greece is better for professionals, as the winds are stronger there, especially in summer. Although those winds decrease the hot temperature, some companies do not even allow charter a yacht then.

Other great places for a yacht charter in the Mediterranean

Amalfi coast, Italy. This picturesque coast boats of more than one famous tourist attraction close-by. Visit Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvio, and more.

From the Amalfi coast, you can get to the Aeolian Islands and Sicily. These Italian jewels are also just as great for yachting. You can find both quaintness and bustle in this region. You can see Mount Etna, an active Stromboli volcano, historic squares and galleries in the capital Palmero, quiet villages, and busy ports.

There is also Malta. It is not as popular for a yacht charter, so it’s quainter. It has 21 islands, but only two, Gozo and Comino, are populated. Relax at secluded beaches, try watersports or explore historic towns.

Finally, consider the Turquoise Coast or the Turkish Riviera. We recommend a gullet, a traditional Turkish yacht, to sail here. Some beautiful places are Butterfly Valley with a butterfly farm, Oludeniz beach, and Kekova Sunken City, seen below the water.

We hope that this article about the best places in the Mediterranean to charter a yacht was helpful. But perhaps you own a boat or a yacht yourself? Would you like to earn money with it? Learn about the basics of boat rentals and how to make more money with them.

Are you planning to travel in Lithuania? When you join a group tour, everything is organized for you, but you have little flexibility. Solo travel offers lots of freedom, but planning can get exhausting. How about a self-drive guide, which has the benefits of both types? We already covered the features and advantages of self-drive tours and how to travel safely. In this article, we will discuss the best self-guided tours in Lithuania.

Why choosing a self-drive tour is a great way to travel in Lithuania

Although Lithuania does not have such an exotic landscape as Iceland, where self-drive tours are popular, it is by no means less beautiful! Lithuanian nature is mild but very green. During a self-drive tour, you will cross streams, drive through lush woods and by wild and grain fields. Or you might travel in winter when everything is covered by snow. You will be able to visit wooden churches and buildings, museums and monuments, and many other locations that will make you feel like you have traveled to the past.

Let’s look at some of the best self-drive tours around to travel in Lithuania that you can book on XRental. When you book these routes, you will receive a detailed Google maps track and a PDF with descriptions of all tourist attractions on the way.

Lakes and Forests: Pailgis-Labanoras-Kulionys (for all cars, 105 km)

This route is good for all kinds of cars as there will be no dirt roads. The route length is 105 km, and there are 24 objects to visit. It takes place in Labanoras Regional Park, the largest regional park in Lithuania. According to Visit Lithuania, around 80% of the territory is covered by woods and 13% by lakes. There are also wetlands, and many rare species of birds live here. And in the village of Labanoras, you will be able to see traditional buildings from many years ago.

The route is best for the people who like deep forests and want to get away from the civilization a little. If you travel at the end of summer or early autumn, you can try looking for some mushrooms because this region is known for having lots! They are also a big part of the local cuisine. Just try not to pick up death cups because they are poisonous.

Explore Dzūkija: Trakai-Merkinė (for all cars, 134 km)

The track is a bit similar to the Pailgis-Labanoras one, being just as woody. It explores Dzūkija, one of the four Lithuania regions, known for its woods, mushrooms, and berries. First, you travel from Trakai, with its beautiful castle in the middle of the lake, across Dzūkija, and finally get to Merkinė, a town at the confluence of three rivers. The route is 134 km long, fine for all types of cars, and has 28 objects to visit on the way.

Dieveniškės appendix: Norviliškės (for all cars, 93 km)

The distance for cars is 93 km. There is also a 9-14 km distance on a bike and 2 km on foot. The Norviliškės route explores the Dieveniškės appendix, a small part of Lithuania surrounded by Belarus. Here, you will see customs offices on the borders. There is also a beautiful Norviliškės manor you can visit, where many activities, even a music festival, are organized. Check out the video of the trip below:

Travel the seaside in Lithuania: Rusnė-Klaipėda (for SUVs, 115 km)

The track leads along the Curonian lagoon from Klaipeda, the third-largest Lithuanian city, to Rusnė, located on the largest island in Lithuania in the Nemunas delta. The length of the track is 115 km: you can easily make it in a day.

This tour is intended for SUVs as it has some dirt roads that might be difficult for smaller cars. Of course, a jeep could serve even better! There are 22 objects of interest you can visit, including amazing natural sights and cultural treasures. Choose this route if you like nature, especially seaside sites, birds, and animals (Rusnė is a popular fishing and birdwatching spot), and want a relatively short but worthwhile trip.

Latvia-Lithuania border: Mažeikiai-Biržai (for SUVs, 317 km)

This 317 km long route is a bit longer and harder. It is also for SUVs. Some roads are asphalt, but the dirt roads might not be manageable for a smaller car. There will also be 3-5 km tracks to go on foot.

The route starts at Mažeikiai, the eighth-largest city in Lithuania, and ends at Biržai, which has many beer breweries and a beautiful Biržai Castle Manor. There are 32 objects to visit along the way, including Žagarė, famous for its cherries, cherry festival, history, and Joniškis, with its museums and nature trails.

Some other routes that might interest you

Druskininkai-Lazdijai. 90 km for all types of cars, 10 objects to visit. This track explores the southeast of Dzūkija. There is a Mizarai crater on this track, although it’s under the surface of the Earth.

Lazdijai-Kybartai. There is a route for all cars, with a 140 km distance and 24 objects to visit. And one for SUVs with 27 tourist attractions. On this route, you get to see the border with Kaliningrad, as well as many nature attractions.

Biržai-Stelmužė. 173 km distance for SUVs, 25 objects to visit. Visit the northernmost point in Lithuania and the oldest Lithuanian oak in Stelmužė, wooden churches, monuments, and more.

But perhaps you want something more exotic than to travel in Lithuania? Check out our article about desert safari experiences!

Some people travel independently; others choose group tours. Organizing everything by yourself can become hard. But leaving everything to the tour agency means little freedom for you. What about a middle option: a self-drive tour? Learn what they include, their advantages, and about some self-drive tours on offer!

What is a self-guided tour?

Going on a self-guided tour means that you will have a provided itinerary but will travel by yourself. Some self-drive tours might also include such amenities as accommodation or vehicles. The itineraries are made by locals that travel the route themselves and take notes. Then they share this knowledge with you. For example, they might create the track on Google maps. Then, when you book the tour, you will be sent the map.

Self-drive tours can be very various. Some only include clean, paved roads. Others might seem like off‑roading since there might be many dirt roads. They might feel like a safari drive. When you choose a tour, the organizers will state what kind of roads there are and what type of car you need. Some tours with good roads are fine for all vehicles. Others might have dirt roads, which require better cars to get through them successfully, such as SUVs and 4×4 vehicles.

Advantages of a self-drive tour

Cost-effectiveness. The usual group tours are expensive: you pay for the transport, for the guide, for the services, etc. While you have to take into account the cost of fuel during self-drive tours, they are still much cheaper.

Flexibility. When you are traveling with an organized tour, you have to keep to a strict schedule. On the other hand, when you are the one driving, there are no deadlines. If you want to get up earlier or later, you can. If you wish to stay longer for lunch, you can. Bad weather on the day you planned to set off? No worries: you can put off the trip for another day.

Freedom and independence. It’s similar to flexibility: you can also decide which way to go or what objects to visit. And while you are not traveling completely independently because you have the route planned for you, you will still get that feeling of independence. You are traveling by yourself, after all!

Sense of achievement. Although you have an itinerary, you will still be navigating and traveling by yourself. And once you complete the tour, you can be proud of your accomplishment!

Chance to explore the local culture. Self-guided tours allow you to visit not only famous sights but also little gems off the beaten track. Moreover, you will have opportunities to interact with locals on a self-drive tour: you will not be surrounded by fellow tourists like on group tours.

Here is a video of a self-drive tour you can book on XRental

Tips when choosing a tour

Self-drive tours are not unsafe, but you should still be careful. There will not be a guide to help you beside you as you will be navigating by yourself. So take all precautions. Here are some tips for a safe self-drive tour.

Make sure your car will manage. Some self-guided tours might include unpaved dirt roads, which might be too difficult to handle for a small vehicle. Also, when planning to go on such routes, ensure you know who to call or contact if you get stuck or need help.

Check your insurance. Accidents are rare if you drive safely, but they happen. So make sure you have insurance on this trip: call your agent if needed. Some agencies organizing these tours might also offer insurance.

Rest before the trip. If you choose a specific self-drive tour, you might have to travel to a particular location to start. Try not to make a big trip before the start: better spend the night somewhere close. Self-guidedtours can be tough. Tiredness will not only make them less enjoyable but also dangerous.
