Florida, the Sunshine State, packs many touristic attractions and activities. The North is just as beautiful, with many natural wonders and historical sights, as well as smaller crowds. Ghosts in St. Augustine, North Florida

Castillo de San Marcos

Jacksonville, the largest Florida city, has much to offer, and theatre is among these things. The Florida Theatre was opened in 1927. It is one of the four remaining high‑style movie palaces in the state and one of the two in North Florida (the other is in Pensacola). Elvis played on this stage, as well as Hozier and Paramore.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

You will see white beaches and green woodlands, with ferns and moss-covered oaks. You might also be lucky enough to glimpse some wildlife, such as deer, raccoons, rabbits, armadillos, and bobcats.

Later on, there is the Big Talbot Island State Park with the famous Boneyard Beach Trail. On this trail, you can see skeletons of live oaks and cedars and can even climb them. It makes for a great photography session and a retrieve from the city life.

Amelia Island and Fernandina beach

Amelia Island in Northeast Florida, close to Georgia, is somewhat of a hidden gem. It‘s beautiful but very quaint, so it‘s a great place if you want to relax.

Fernandina Beach is the main town on this island. Once, it used to be a haven for smugglers. Now it is a cute and peaceful town. Also, you can boat both in the ocean – it has 24 miles of beach on the Atlantic coasts – and in the Intracoastal waterways, which last for 165 miles in Fort Lauderdale and 3,000 miles in total.

Missouri Bike Laws: Overview of Bicycle Requirements and Regulations

Bikes are cool. Missouri is a cool place to ride a bike too. But you have to know the rules to ride safely and comfortably, with minimum risk of accidents and penalties. We reviewed and summarized Missouri bike laws just for you, so read on if you are interested.

Where do the laws allow to ride a bike in Missouri?

The most important thing is to know the legal places to ride. Riding on illegal roads does not only increase the risk of an accident but might also bring you a penalty.

First, let’s talk about the roads. Bicyclists can ride on all roads and streets, except interstates. The speed there is just too great, and they are too dangerous for cyclists. When riding on a road, ride in the same direction as other traffic and stay on the right side. You can use road shoulders too. Two cyclists can ride side by side, as long as they do not obstruct the way for other traffic.

You can also ride bikes on sidewalks, except in business districts. Missouri bike laws strictly prohibit riding on sidewalks in business districts. Otherwise, you can use sidewalks but remember that pedestrians have the right of way. Before overtaking them on sidewalks, give a signal. You can’t ride motorized bicycles (similar to mopeds) on the sidewalk, though.

Missouri laws when riding bikes in the dark

If you plan to ride in the dark (30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes to sunset), there are more rules to minimize the risk of accidents. The bike must have:

A lamp in the front (installed or carried by the cyclist) with a white light that is visible from 500 feet away;
A red reflector in the rear that is visible from 600 feet away;
Reflective material or lights on moving parts of the bicyclist, such as lower legs, visible from 200 feet away from the rear and the front;
And reflective material or lights on the sides vehicle or the bicyclist, visible at 300 ft.

This equipment should make other drivers see you in the dark. Of course, you must follow general safety rules too, just like during the day.

Required bike equipment

To legally ride on public roads, the bike must have certain equipment. Brakes are the most important. You must be able to stop within 25 feet when riding at a speed of 10mph. There is also the equipment you need at night, which we already covered.

What about helmets? The state itself does not say anything about helmets, but different Missouri counties have different rules. In most municipalities of St. Louis County, bicyclists under 17 need to wear helmets. Some even require everyone to wear helmets. Columbia and St. Charles municipalities require cyclists under 16 to wear helmets.

Following the rules for motor vehicles

Bicyclists are not exempt from traffic rules. Just like motor vehicles, they have to follow all the traffic rules applicable. So, do not forget to stop at a red light, do not ride drunk, signal turns with your hand or mechanical devices. Be especially careful when making a left turn. If the road has two lanes, move to the second lane to make a left turn. Still, try to stay to the right side of this lane too.

If you do not obey traffic rules or bike laws, you can get a fine. If you are under 17, the bike might also be impounded for up to 5 days. Also, if a car hits you when you are not abiding by one of the laws, you will likely be partially at fault and might not recover damages.

Also, be careful when riding. We do not recommend listening to music or looking at your cellphone when on a bike. Such things distract you, and you might not notice an obstacle, crash, and put at risk not only yourself but also others.

Hawaii Scooter Laws: Regulations on Mopeds, Motor Scooters and Electric Scooters in the Aloha State

Are you planning a trip to Hawaii? Ask yourself how you will get around. There are buses and rental cars and taxis, of course. But if you are looking for a more flexible vehicle, consider scooters. You have to know the regulations, though. Read on to learn about essential Hawaii scooter laws to operate your moped, motor scooter, or e-scooter safely.

Moped laws in Hawaii

Mopeds are often confused with scooters: you can learn more about their differences here. Like most states, the Hawaii state considers mopeds to be transportation devices with an engine up to 50cc. They must also have automatic transmission and a maximum speed of up to 30mph. You can drive it with any driving license: you do not need a motorcycle license specifically. The minimum age to ride a moped is 15.

You can ride mopeds on all roads, including highways. The moped should be as near the right side as possible, except when making a left turn, avoiding something, or when a road carries traffic in one direction and has two or more lanes. However, the best places to ride mopeds are bike lanes: if you see them, be on them, except if the sign prohibits it. Never ride on sidewalks. Finally, only one person can ride a moped. Minors must also wear helmets.

If you plan to buy your own moped in Hawaii, keep in mind that you need to register it to ride on public highways. You must have a certification label from the manufacturer and complete a safety inspection. You will then have to wear your registration decal on the rear fender of the cycle.

Hawaii motor scooters laws

Hawaii defines motor scooters as vehicles that are more powerful than mopeds: they have an engine larger than 50cc and a speed of more than 30mph. The state also puts motor scooters and motorcycles in one category. You also need a motorcycle license to ride both in Hawaii.

Both motor scooters and motorcycles are entitled to use the full lane. However, two motorcycles can ride side by side. Motor scooters and motorcycles drivers can also use HOV lanes. However, lane splitting is prohibited, and you can only overtake other vehicles in a separate lane. Minors need to wear helmets on scooters. Also, a scooter must have a windshield, or you must have eye protection.

If you plan to purchase a motor scooter or a motorcycle in Hawaii, do not forget to register and insure it. If you are planning to rent one, the rental company should take care of it. You need to be 18 and have a driving license to rent a scooter in Hawaii.

Electric Scooters in Hawaii

Electric scooters are becoming some of the most popular transportation devices in the cities. They are ecological, flexible, and fun. But the Hawaii State scooter laws are still not very well-developed, compared to, say, California scooter laws. In 2021, lawmakers are just starting to legalize scooters and set regulations. You can check out the new laws here.

According to the laws, you need to be at least 15 to ride electric scooters on public property. You also need to wear a helmet with a chin strap under 16 (although we recommend everyone to wear it). You must also ride alone and keep both hands on the handles. If you plan to use the scooter in the dark, it must have lights equipped, which cannot be blue. The maximum speed allowed is 15mph. You can ride scooters on streets and highways, although bike lanes are usually the best places for electric scooters. The law allows counties to set regulations themselves, such as on parking, allowing scooters on sidewalks and highways, etc. So be sure to check the rules in a specific county where you will ride!

6 Great Road Trips in Texas: Explore the Best of the Lone Star State

Texas, the Lone Star State, the second largest in the US, is rarely considered the best tourist destination. But it certainly has many things to offer! From beautiful landscapes and nature trails to historic districts and museums, the state has it all. Read on to learn about the best road trips in Texas.

A classic road trip: Texas Route 66

The Mother Road runs through Texas, too! And it’s one of the best road trips you can take in Texas. The Texas part is not as long as in other states, such as Missouri. But it definitely has many attractions. The current Interstate I-40 runs very similarly to how Route 66 used to run.

Start at Shamrock, then head to McLean. Here you can see one of the first gas stations, Texas Route 66 Museum, and the Devil’s Rope Museum. Afterward, visit Amarillo, the largest city on the 178 mile Route 66 portion. It has a Route 66 Sixth Street Historic District, a nightlife and shopping hub, with restaurants, antique and specialty shops. Also, check out Big Texan Steak Ranch, where you can try their 72 oz steak challenge! There is also a famous Cadillac Ranch nearby. After Amarillo, head to Vega, a small town, and Adrian, Route 66 halfway point. There, you can stop at MidPoint Cafe to eat classic American dishes, just like in the 50s.

For nature lovers: Texas state parks

Big Bend National Park is one of the best state parks in Texas. There are 238 miles of trails, which you can hike, bike, or ride on horseback. There are even trails you can drive on with 4×4 vehicles! Big Bend Park is large, remote, and is not visited so often, so it has a low level of light pollution and is a perfect location for stargazing. However, remember that it is a desert park and the temperatures can rise very much in summer. Try not to hike in the afternoon and drink lots of water.

Also, consider visiting Big Bend State Ranch Park too, which is very near. And if you go to the east, you will find Seminole Canyon State Park and Kickapoo Cavern State Park, which are also great.

Dallas Loop

Belt Line Road is a 92-mile looping road near Dallas, with 15 cities on the road. You can see both urban and historic sights, as well as beautiful nature spots.

First, visit Fort Worth because it’s worth it! Pun intended. There are Cultural District and Botanic Garden museums and a zoo. There are more than 200 patios and restaurants, so you will find something you like for sure. Also, consider visiting Dinosaur Valley State Park nearby, where you can see dinosaur footprints!

Later, head to Waco. Explore the Magnolia market, the Woolly Mammoth, and Dr Pepper museums. Other attractive towns nearby include Carrollton, Garland, and Grand Prairie, with historical architecture, peaceful shopping streets, and lovely markets.

Texas Beach Road Trip

Although beaches might not be what first comes to mind when someone thinks of Texas, they are beautiful and well worth exploring. You can start at Galveston near Houston, an island city. It has more than beaches: check out The Strand Historic District and glass pyramids in Moody Gardens, such as the Aquarium pyramid. There is also Galveston Island State Park, great for bird watching, kayaking and fishing.

After exploring Galveston, you can go to Surfside Beach, a lovely and peaceful beach town. The ride will take just an hour. Then you can move to Matagorda, which is much quainter and less-visited than Galveston, but its nature might be even more beautiful.

Finally, go towards Rockport, which has many attractions nearby. Rockport beach is the first Texas Blue Wave beach, safe and beautiful. There is also Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. It has more than 400 bird species, including the only flock of wild whooping cranes, one of the rarest American birds. If you want some more peace and natural sights, consider San Jose and Mustang Islands.

El Paso road trip to feel like a cowboy

Do you want to feel like a cowboy? Travel around El Paso! This city is surrounded by deserts and mountains, great for exploring. First, of course, visit El Paso itself. There are two peaks of interest very nearby: Mount Cristo Rey and the Franklin Mountains. The Franklin Mountains are in the middle of the city so you can hardly miss it. Mount Cristo Rey is very close too and offers a great view from the top.

Afterward, you can visit Hueco Tanks State Park, which has unique granite formations. Rock climbers love it especially! Just keep in mind that you either have to book a tour or reserve a permit for a self-guided tour in advance. Then, visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which has the highest peaks in Texas. The park is superb for hiking and backpacking.

If you want to make a loop from El Paso, go south to visit Fort Davis and Marfa. The Davis Mountains near Fort Davis are great for bird-watchers, as well as nature enthusiasts. There is also a Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch and Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. Then, visit Marfa, which is an art and soaring center. Here you can see the famous sculptural installation Prada Marfa.

The most popular cities: Austin to San Antonio

This list of Texas road trips could not complete if we did not include the most popular Texas cities and the route between them. There are only about 80 miles between them but a bunch of attractions. You can either go by the I-35 or backroads: you could explore more lovely small towns this way. Also, keep in mind that there can be traffic jams on I-35.

What to visit? First, San Marco. The city is known for its outlet shopping, a clear river you can even snorkel in, and having Texas State University stands here. A bit off to the side but pretty close is Lockhart, Texas Barbecue Capital, where you can have amazing lunch! Afterward, there is the New Braunfels town. It has both Guadalupe and Comal Rivers, Schlitterbahn Water Park, and the historic Gruene district. If you are a fan of natural wonder, consider visiting Natural Bridge Caverns between New Braunfels and San Antonio.

Missouri Travel: 7 Great Road Trips to Explore the Best of the State

Missouri, the 24th state in the US with more than 6 million people, has many things to offer. And great destinations and road trips are among them! Travel to Missouri State Parks

Marvel at Missouri Waterfalls

Missouri also has quite a lot of rivers and waterfalls. From Mina Sauk Falls, the highest waterfall in the state, it’s a short distance to Johnson’s shut-ins, where the river cascades over rocks in many rivulets. An hour from Johnson’s shut-ins are Hickory Canyons in St. Genevieve, which look best after heavy rain. There is also a beautiful waterfall in Marvel Cave, or Grand Falls in Joplin, the largest continuously flowing waterfall in Missouri. But they are quite a bit south of Hickory Canyons: it’s more than four hours drive.

The Way of the American Genius

Highway 36 does not sound as grand as Route 66, but it is very much worth a visit. This area is connected to such people as Mark Twain, Walt Disney, Molly Brown, J. C. Penney, and Jesse James, and such discoveries as quilt, pony express, and sliced bread. Highway 36 starts at Saint Joseph in the northwest and finishes at Hannibal in the northeast. It’s almost 200 miles.

Attractions along the route include Pony Express Museum at Saint Joseph, J. C. Penney Museum at Hamilton, a mural dedicated to sliced bread in Chillicothe, Pershing State Park and Locust Creek covered bridge in Meadville, Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline and Mark Twain’s and Molly Brown’s museums in Hannibal. Choose this route if you like museums, history and want to feel closer to American Geniuses.

Visit Missouri watermills

Are you a fan of watermills? Missouri is one of the best states to explore watermills. You can start at Rockbridge Mill, which was built in 1888 and operated until the 1940s. Now it is a perfect calm retreat, where you can dine, fish, and relax. From there, it’s only 25 minutes to a very picturesque Hodgson Mill. Another 20 minutes south to get to the Dawt Mill. Do you like wine? Are you interested in winemaking? Consider touring Rhineland, the Missouri wine country. Besides wineries, it has beautiful nature and some German-style buildings.

California Scooter Laws: 7 Things You Should Know Before Riding Electric Scooters in California

Electric scooters are cool. Whether you have your own or are planning to rent one, there are things you should know before riding off to the streets. You do not want to get a fine, do you? We will tell you all about California scooter laws, as they are set out in California Vehicle Code §21235, so you can ride your scooter safely and happily.

Wear a helmet if you are under 18

It is a legal requirement, which can get you a $200 fine if you do not comply. You can use a bicycle helmet, although a full-face helmet is safer. Remember to fasten it well.

Adults are not required to wear a helmet, but we really recommend it. Scooter accidents are pretty frequent, and you want to avoid head injuries at all costs. If you decide to ride without a helmet, you do it at your own risk.

Have a valid driver’s license

When riding a scooter, you have to carry a valid driver’s license. You also need one to rent a scooter. You can also use a learner’s permit instead. But if the police catch you on a scooter without a driver’s license or a learner’s permit, you will get a traffic ticket.

Do not tandem ride

Taking a passenger with you on the scooter, also known as a tandem ride, is forbidden. It is very unsafe as it becomes much harder to control a scooter with extra weight.

You also can’t carry any bundles that would not allow you to keep both hands on the handles.

Do not go faster than 15 mph

The speed limit for scooters is 15 miles per hour. If you go over it, you can be stopped and fined: the fine can be up to $250. So be careful not to speed too much!

If you use a Bird or Lime scooter, you won’t even be able to go faster. But if you ride at full-speed downhill, the speed increases, so keep that in mind.

Dismount when making a left turn

It might sound annoying, we know. But it’s the law, and the authorities passed it to protect you. Left turns are difficult, and the probability of an accident is pretty high. So when you want to turn left on an electric scooter, do this:

At the intersection, stop on the right curb;
Dismount;
Make a turn by walking.

Do not ride a scooter on the sidewalk

The best place to ride a scooter is bike lanes, either class II or class IV. Class II bikeways are separated from the street by a white stripe. Class IV bikeways have physical barriers from the street traffic, such as cones. The speed limit is also 15mph.

If you can see no bike lanes, you can travel on streets, but their speed limit cannot be higher than 25mph. Local authorities might also allow scooters on roads with speed limits up to 35mph. You still cannot ride the scooter faster than 15mph.

You can only step on sidewalks when you are planning to park the scooter (also, remember to park nicely to not block the area for pedestrians). Crosswalks are also technically sidewalks, so cross them on foot. You can get a ticket for not doing so.

Follow all other vehicle safety rules

According to the California Vehicle Code, an electric scooter has the same rights and obligations as other motor vehicles. Of course, you don’t have to wear a seatbelt because an electric scooter does not have one. But, for example, do not drive intoxicated: you can get a DUI charge just the same, as well as a ticket up to $350.

These are the most important laws to abide by when riding an electric scooter in California. There might also be some local rules in certain areas.
